Arthritis

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an umbrella term used to describe the inflammation of joints, which causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the affected area. It is common condition that affects millions of people around the world, and it can be caused by several factors at such as age, genetics, lifestyle, and injury.

There are many types of Arthritis, the two most common types are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. You may have heard of these too:

Gout

Juvenile inflammatory arthritis (inflammatory arthritis starting below the age of 16)

Secondary arthritis (can develop after an injury)

Enteropathic arthritis (arthritis associated with inflammatory bowel disease)

Reactive arthritis (arthritis triggered by an infection)

Post viral arthritis (arthritis triggered by a virus)

Psoriatic arthritis

Ankylosing spondylitis

The National Institute for health and Care Excellence (NICE, 2022) document that manual therapy may help provide a benefit for some joints by increasing mobility and reducing pain. Osteopathy uses an array of techniques, including passive stretching, soft tissue techniques and acupressure/trigger point therapy that could be used to support those living with arthritis. Although there is no cure for Arthritis, Osteopathy is a promising treatment option that can help manage the symptoms and improve overall function.
